Drawing and Painting Assignments
Week 1: Get Sketchbook
Due: July 221
Purchase a spiral or bounded sketchbook or use a 3 brad folder and put copy paper in the brads.
Week 2: Non-Objective Drawing
Due: July 28
Emphasize pure design. Focus on the elements of art: Color, pattern, texture, shape, and/or movement
Week 3: Emotion
Due: August 4
Draw a subject intentionally using expressive visual language. For example, create an angry drawing of your hand, a powerful drawing of a car, or a depressed flower. Pick an emotion and then an object. Evoke that feeling of the object the best you can in a drawing.
Week 4: Landscape
Due: August 11
Sit outside and draw what you see. Include details of trees, people, buildings, etc.. Take your time and actually draw what you see
Week 5: Body
Due: August 18
Ask a friend, family, or a classmate to pose their hands or feet so you can draw them from life. Try to make it 3D using line and shading. Remember no outlines but shading, there should not be a halo mark around the entire foot or hand.
Week 6: Animal Observation
Due: August 25
Select an animal that you can observe and photograph often. Draw the animal in different positions plus attach pictures of the animal on the page as a collage.
Week 7: Debate
Due: August 31
Read the article "Selling Art or Selling Out" Harlem Renaissance on the Scholastic Website. Write a paragraph viewing your opinion, be descriptive, and elaborate. The student password is Elitescholars1

Week 8: Free Drawing
Due: September 8
Draw for at least 45 minutes of any idea, visual concept, or collage to fill the page.
Week 9: NO HOMEWORK

Week 10: Seascape
Due: October 6
Draw a seascape of a place you have been or imagine yourself vacationing to in the future
Week 11: Composition with an Object
Due: October 13
Choose an object. Draw the object choosing a composition utilizing the rule of thirds, emphasis, size, color(value), etc..
Week 12: Still-Life: Fruits and/or Vegetables
Due: October 20
Create a still-life drawing of an arrangement of fruits and/or vegetables. Include a cloth or drapery underneath the objects.
Week 13: Parts of a Skeleton
Due: October 27
Choose a section of a skeleton to draw, include a background or a close-up
Week 14: Portrait of a Friend
Due: November 3
Have a friend pose for you or take a picture in an interesting composition, not just a mugshot
Week 15: Artist Mentor
Due: November 10
Choose an artist that has created a self-portrait, write about his/her life, art, style, and why you are drawn to this artist. Include a picture of their self-portrait.
Week 16: Your Hood
Due: November 17
Draw something specific to your city or town that is specific to the area. Ex: Statue of Liberty to NYC
Week 17: Free Drawing
Due: December 1
Draw for at least 45 minutes of any idea, visual concept, or collage to fill the page.
Week 18: No Homework
Due: December 8
2nd Semester
Week 1: Moment in Black History
Due: January 12
Find a moment in black history to write about. Include a picture with a written detailed description of the moment in black history.
Week 2: Profile of a Person
Due: January 19
Draw and add value to a side profile of a person.
Week 3: Your Greatest Fear
Due: January 26
Draw your greatest fear. Fill the page and add value.
Week 4: Worm or Bird Eye View Drawing
Due: February 2
Create a drawing from the perspective of a worm or bird, and add value.
Week 5: Debate
Due: February 9
Read the article, "Art or Toilet Humor" and form an argument answering the questions in complete sentences, and put it in paragraph format.
Week 6: Tools
Due: February 16
Draw tools in the profession of your choice. For example, if you want to be an artist, draw paintbrushes.
Week 7: Something Not Pretty
Due: February 23
Draw something not pretty in your eyes.
Week 8: Container
Due: March 2
Draw a container holding objects. Add value.
Week 9: Free Drawing
Due: March 9
